BEIJING — China set a growth target of "around 5%" for 2024, according to the "Government Work Report" released Tuesday. The targets for GDP and other economic indicators were published as part of the opening of the National People's Congress annual meeting. The work report emphasized the need to "ensure both high-quality development and greater security," preventing risks and maintaining social stability, among other tasks. The work report said that "internal drivers of development are being built up," but added the country should be "well prepared for all risks and challenges." More than 2,800 delegates attended the opening of the National People's Congress annual meeting in Beijing on Tuesday.

China will promote coordinated development of trade in goods and services, protect an international business environment, and relax market access including lifting restrictions on foreign investment in manufacturing, he said. The import expo was launched by President Xi Jinping in 2018 to promote China’s free trade credentials and counter criticism of its trade surplus with many countries. Australia's current Foreign Minister Penny Wong has sought to stabilize the two countries' relationship since her party won elections last year. The study conducted by the IW economic institute, analysing Bundesbank data on behalf of the newspaper, found German licence revenues from China more than tripled in 2022 compared to 2014. Compared with 2020, the increase was about half. "There is a clear early indication that Chinese companies are looking for a new way to get access to German technology," said Juergen Matthes, head of IW's global and regional markets research unit. Tech licences are one way for China to try to get in "through the back door", he told Reuters.
